Bonding Solutions for Solar Power Panels & Alternative Energy

Alternative energy production requires a much broader and innovative use of materials, such as in solar power, where there are semiconductors for photovoltaics (PV), enhanced thermally conductive materials for cooling PV materials, ceramic insulators and glasses for thin film solar power panels.

S-Bond joining has been proven for silicon bonding and joining PV coated glass to metallic conductors. These active solders permit the fluxless joining of these materials to metals and enables conductor busses to attach to the power side of the PV solar cells.

S-Bond has also been demonstrated to bond ceramic backing and heat sinks to concentrated PV solar panels, producing nearly void-free joints, resulting in effective heat sinks that preserve the PV materials under ultra-high power densities expected in CPV applications.ns

Harnessing wind energy requires the use of aluminum and other light metals for structures, while the high power transients present thermal management challenges in electrical conversion equipment.

Solar and wind energy are transient, requiring innovative and cost effective energy storage capacity from batteries. S-Bond joining has applications in these dissimilar materials bonding areas (silicon bonding, solar module bonding) where various combinations of metals, ceramics, glass and composites are used.

Aluminum will be used extensively in non-PV parabolic solar concentrator panels at central solar power plants. S-Bond is an effective way of joining aluminum without exposing it to the high temperatures of brazing. Therefore, S-Bond joined aluminum is much harder and is much less susceptible to damage and distortion. These same advantages for joining aluminum apply to wind turbine structures. Additionally, where light metals such as titanium and magnesium alloys might be used in wind turbines, S-Bond offers excellent methods to fabricate components.

Energy storage systems will be critical for the success of solar and wind power generation. Battery and storage cell electrical terminals and interconnects require the joining of copper, aluminum and other metals. Additionally, solid-state power conversion systems will require thermal management devices. These applications and their related energy storage components all benefit from S-Bond’s active solder joining technology.
